Company Giveaways

December 18, 2009

Company giveaways are not only for giving, but also for brand imaging and marketing. For these reasons, businesses must exert time and effort to think of items that will serve as company giveaways. These items must be effective enough to convey the image of the company and its purpose for existence. They must be trendiest enough to capture the interest of the receivers and even those who only see them.

In this time of technology advancement, why not consider items related to technology? Surely, technological gadgets will become the trendiest company giveaways this year.

Oftentimes, people from the corporate world have multiple files to open. Because USB or flash drives are common file storage, most likely, they are holding more than two of these. So, a USB hub is useful and is more appropriate for a company giveaway. Allow each hub to have a logo of the company.

Everyone is into iPods right now. Give them one with your logo, as free advertisement.

People in the corporate world are too busy; they cannot just get home to watch movies. They stay either in their respective offices or in their cars. So, while in car, why not give them Portable DVD Players and the opportunity to have a good catch of a movie?

It is great to place your favorite photos in one digital picture viewer. Give them this digital picture viewer as a company giveaway.

A little time travelling should be spent listening to sweet music or hearing current events. Therefore, wireless headphones will surely be appreciated by your friends or acquaintances in the corporate world.

Once the receiver gets a hold of one of these precious items as your company giveaways, he will surely feel important because this is one of the trendiest gift he ever received and even one of the trendiest corporate giveaways distributed. More importantly, this is one of the few gifts that have become useful to him.

Be a Good Singer

December 17, 2009

One of the most important aspects of singing is knowing your vocal range, i.e. the lowest and the highest musical notes that you can comfortably sing in your true voice. There are two things to be clarified at this point. Singing comfortably means singing smoothly, i.e. without shrieking, screaming, shouting or straining your vocal chords to the point where they won't ever work again. True voice means your actual voice, i.e. speech level voice (and not falsetto).

Once you know what your vocal range is, the next thing you need to do is regularly put your vocal chords to use with some vocal exercises, singing lessons, etc. You should practice going up and down a musical octave, you should practice scales, staccato, rhythm, etc. Never force yourself to hit a note outside your vocal range. You will only end up straining your vocal chords. Vocal range is different for every singer, and whether or not it can be increased also depends on each person's singing technique, method of practice, and type of voice.

If you're serious about becoming a good singer, you should make it a point to listen to different voices. Don't just remain in your comfort zone, or listen to singers from your favorite genre of music. Broaden your horizon and don't be afraid to explore new musical territory.

Contrary to what you may hear from many people, smoking is not good for your vocal chords. It is NOT a way of getting more bass in your voice. So, if you're a smoker and a wannabe singer, you're gonna have to let go of one of them, because you certainly can't have both.

Practice your high notes, preferably, while in a standing position. It helps you to make better use of your diaphragm, and that is something very important if you want to sing well, and sing correctly.

Avoid eating or drinking anything extremely cold or extremely hot. It hinders the smooth functioning of your vocal chords and can cause your throat to go dry.

Devote a few minutes of your time every day, to performing breathing exercises. Your control over your breath plays a major role in how well you sing. Breathing exercises help in improving lung capacity and breath utilization.

Last but definitely not the least, practice regularly and sincerely. Remember, there is no substitute for hard work.

Skirt Boys

December 16, 2009

Walking through the lively districts of Harajuku and Shibuya in Tokyo, one might encounter a sight unusual to many people's eyes: men in skirts. Not kilts or kimono, but skirts.

Called "the skirt boys" or "skirt tribe", the skirt-wearing men of Tokyo are beginning to get some attention from the fashion world. How is this different from being a cross-dresser?

There was a second-year art student whose garment is made of an almost transparent white cotton, with pretty geometric designs along the hem. He said, "I liked the way the hem flutters in the wind. I got it at a used clothes shop for 1,000 yen." He said he first wanted a skirt after seeing the robes in the "Harry Potter" films, and now has four that he made himself. He also said that he first became aware he was part of a trend when another man said, "So, there really is a skirt tribe."

The student said, "Cross-dressers are people who want to be girls. I'm not wearing this because it's what girls wear, but because I like the line and the texture of the material." His immediate family hasn't passed comment, but a number of his extended relations live in his neighborhood, and he's careful not to be seen on days he wears one of his skirts.

Another "skirt boys" was wearing a yellow jersey-like top and a checked skirt of about the same color, extending around 10 centimeters below the knee. A pair of sandals completed the look. When someone tried to approach him, he looked embarrassed and slipped into the crowd. During the summer, some men even bought sarongs at an Indian wares shop. A shop clerk said, "There are many ways to wear a sarong. They feel like they really take to the shape of your body."

As the line of men's clothes becomes more androgynous, a skirt comes in handy for setting the full form of an outfit, that is, if you feel it's beautiful. As to the emergent trend's difference from cross-dressing, the major point there is whether skirts suit a particular man.

Along with skirts, men's heels and slim, muscular physiques are forming the basis for a "slim macho" look that is just now gaining popularity. More than whether a look is manly or feminine, there are more men now who think that, as long as it's stylish, it's good. As disparities widen in this competitive society, there are more non-aggressive men who prize choosing their own lifestyle over conventional social status - a spirit that has come to be reflected in their fashion.

A Good Leader

December 15, 2009

Most bosses these days are wondering how to be a good leader. Problem is, as people change and organizations change, effective leadership styles too, undergo a change. The most important of all the qualities of a good leader is dealing with this change. After all, in life only one thing remains constant: change. Nothing is pervasive in leadership and management. Everything is an outcome of the particular trends and accepted values of a particular time period.

So how to be a good leader? Is one born with leadership qualities or are qualities of effective leaders acquired over the years? Developing the characteristics of effective leaders depends a lot on the upbringing of a person. Children taught to take their own decisions always make better leaders than others. Because, making difficult decisions forms the crux of business leadership is perhaps the hardest part. Another thing which makes a person a good leader is the ability to get people to do what the leader wants them to do. This trait of effective leaders can also be seen in a lot of children who display good organizational skills and are able to delegate work to others when working in a team, whether it is a homework team or a sports team. So leadership skills are most certainly developed, not inherited.

Here are some of the most common qualities of a good leader.

Set an Example: It is very important that the leader himself displays the characteristics and traits which he wants his subordinates to follow. By setting a good example for others, the leader should set a performance benchmark for the rest of the employees.

Enthusiasm: Let's face it. No one likes a grumpy boss. Discipline is one thing, but a leader should look like he is genuinely enjoying the job. The important leadership challenge is to create a pleasant working environment which fosters effective upward and downward communication of ideas. If the leader doesn't seem to enjoy the work he's doing, what kind of example is he setting on the rest of the employees?

Vision and Direction: A leader should have a clear vision of what he wants his business to look like after a few years. But a vision is not enough. A leader should also be able to create a pathway in order to reach his goal. He needs to know what steps he has to take to accomplish his vision. A leader also needs to ensure that his subordinates too, share the vision and the entire organization is motivated enough to fulfill this "shared vision".

Clarity in Thinking: A good leader is a clear thinker. Often, in times of crisis in the business due to a hostile internal or external business environment, the vision and thinking of people get clouded. In such times, it is up to the leader to act as the guiding light to his subordinates and show them the way out of the business crisis.

Motivate Others: A leader is supposed to sell his vision and goals to his employees. But the vision that the leader sets should be persuasive enough that the employees feel like becoming a part of that vision. For this, a leader needs to have very good people-skills. A leader should also make his subordinates feel like they are part of the team and not alienate them with the traditional "I am the boss, you're not" mentality. A leader should be able to extract the best from his employees through a shared vision and collective effort, not merely through coercion.
