Seven CastlesA Shanghai blog featuring news and views of great interest November 25 Pajamas
November 25, 2009
Pajamas. are traditionally loose-fitting, two-piece garments derived from the original garment and worn chiefly for sleeping. But today, pajamas may refer to several garments, for both daywear and nightwear, derived from traditional pyjamas and involving variations of style and material.
Pyjamas are usually in a soft fabric and often contain visual references to a thing that may hold some special appeal to the wearer. Images of sports, animals, flowers, balloons, stripes, and other things may all be used to decorate them. Pyjamas may also be found in plainer designs.
Pajamas are usually worn with bare feet and often without underwear, although these vary by personal preference. They are often worn as comfort wear even when not in bed, and are also sometimes worn as a fashion statement.
However, a survey conducted a few years ago found that pajama-wearing on the streets and in public places such as shops, banks and parks is among the most uncivilized things in the city, along with aggressive pets, unhelpful neighbors and disregard for the natural environment. As Shanghai will host the World Expo next year rumors even said that city officials are preparing for the influx of foreigners with a campaign to ban citizens from wearing their pajamas out in the streets.
Why do local people wear pajamas? Some believe residents are showing off their social status by underlining how close to the city center they live, but I think comfort and convenience (or straight laziness, if you may say so) are obviously the main attractions and I even take pajamas as a unique reminder of Shanghai's shikumen past, in part because the realms of public and private space were so blurred in everyday life. It is interesting to see people putting comfort before style - it adds to Shanghai's own distinctive culture! I don't think there should be a fuss about it! If we forget pajamas, then what about those other hot and sexy clothes, especially those worn by trendy ladies in summer? Are they more harmful to the city's image?

November 24, 2009
Flirting is natural. It does not make a man a player or a woman promiscuous. It is only a natural reaction to seeing someone whom you find attractive. However, the extent of the flirting, and the language used can make the difference.
Female flirting body language has been considered an enigma. That is probably because women prefer to be creative with their expressions in flirting and body language. They could try out pick up lines for girls one day, and try being the shy girl the next. Basically, female flirting body language is not easy to read. Crossing the legs and sitting is a classic flirting technique and she may switch the legs as well (Basic Instinct style). Playing with the hair and smiling is another thing that women do involuntarily when they like a guy. Showing her bare neck and shoulders is a way to entice men as well. Maintain eye contact with the man and this prolonged eye contact makes the man listen more intently and get attracted to them. Play with the round surface of the glass or the plate while flirting with men, and the conversation goes on normally, but the hand movement is slow and steady. Run their palm on their neck, lightly and gently, to bring the man's attention to their neck. Keep touching the guy in one way or another, like stroking his arm or playing with his hair.
For very long it was believed that only men knew the art of flirting and body language. As such, men's flirting body language is a little bit more developed and can be stipulated with a bit more certainty. Make the effort to come and talk to you, as a sweet gesture if you consider that fact that he is probably scared of how you will react. Slightly and fast raise the eyebrows when he sees you and show a smile when you look back at him.. Get macho and manly, and try to impress the woman by seeming like the alpha male of the clan. Fidget with their looks a little bit when they flirt, like straightening his hair and collar and dusting off their sleeves. Whe he gets nervous, it is almost certain that he is interested in the woman and is trying to flirt with her. Broadening the shoulders and trying to look as broad and big as he can is a classic flirting sign. Try to maintain physical contact with the woman while flirting with her.
Flirting body language should neither be taken very seriously, nor should be taken lightly. Flirting is common among friends as well. At this time the flirting and body language signs almost remain the same. Bottom line, go with the flow and have fun.
RELATED November 23 Childhood Pain
We are emotional beings. Emotions are our way of responding to situations and environments around us. Unfortunately they are also a major contributor to and source of the pain we live with every day. We come into this life experiencing things, feeling and responding to everything around us - some of which causes wounding. Emotional pain can come in many different ways and forms, but it is usually divided into three distinct stages: childhood, adolescent and adult.
The first stage, childhood, obviously happens when we are children. This type of pain can occur even while the child is in the womb, as scientific research is revealing that a fetus can sense and respond to activities and voices on the outside of the womb. Childhood pain continues until adolescence is reached, whereby adolescent pain is then accrued.
This second stage builds upon the first, many times compiling deeper, more passionate emotional pain as hormones are changing and relationships are developing. This in turn leads to the third stage, adult pain. As adults we enter into the grown-up realm of commitment to jobs, relationships, family and we live with tremendous amounts of responsibilities and pressures. Depending on how we handle all of these things, emotional pain can result.
Childhood pain, referred to as "hidden core" pain, are wounds inflicted into our core being as a child. Examples of childhood pain are abandonment from a parents' leaving, divorce or death, molestation or sexual abuse, anxiety or fear from an alcoholic family, physical or verbal abuse, and even the neglect or lack of love as a child. Simple events like name calling or watching a mother get slapped can leave a child challenged with issues of bonding, intimacy and trust.
We all have had some sort of emotional wounding happen to us as children because none of us had perfect parents, teachers or adult role models; but when we're willing to look at these experiences we lived through and how we responded to them, we can find emotional healing.

Jim, Dave and Eric die and arrive at the gate, St Paul explains to them:
"Heaven is a very big place and you need a car to get around. The car you get depends solely on how faithful you were to your spouse while you were alive."
Jim was married for 15 years and cheated on his wife 3 times so he got a Citi Golf.
Dave was married 20 years and cheated on his wife once so he got a Toyota Corolla.
Eric was married for 50 years and never cheated on his wife so he got a BMW.
Jim and Dave were very envious of Eric!
A couple of months later Jim and Dave see Eric sitting on the pavement, crying...
Dave asks: "What's wrong, buddy?"
Eric replies: "I just saw my wife."
Jim asks: "So? why are you crying?"
Eric says: "She was on a bicycle!"
