Shanghai's New Best Eight

October 13, 2009

About one hundred years ago, writers and experts first named the Best Eight Scenic Spots in Shanghai. Most of them were natural spots, but six of them disappeared as the city evolves.

Recently, the city announced the new Best Eight Scenic Spots after an exhaustive survey canvassing both residents and experts. The new Best Eight, of both natural and man-made landscapes, are popular among both local people and tourists from home and abroad, representing the city's culture, history and course of development.

The new Best Eight are:

The Bund - known as "the Gallery of World Architecture", splendid!

Yuyuan Garden area - with Yuyuan Garden and the City God Temple, traditional!.

Lujiazui area - with the Oriental Pearl TV Power, Jin Mao Tower and the Shanghai World Financial Center, representing "the heights of the city", prosperous!

Shikumen buildings - the typical construction style in Shanghai, bearing both Chinese and Western style, familiar!

Nanjing Road East - with about 100 years of history, one of the most prosperous areas in Shanghai, bustling!

Sheshan Hill resort - in Songjiang District, with the biggest Catholic Church in east China and one of the earliest astronomical observatories in the nation, grandeur!

Fengjing ancient town - in Jinshan District, a typical water town in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, the cradle of farmer-painters, folk!

Dianshan Lake resort - in Qingpu District, the largest natural lake in Shanghai, with Zhujiajiao Water Town, Daguanyuan Garden and Oriental Land, beautiful!

People have been encouraged to submit names, of four to five Chinese characters, which express the spots' characteristics and essence.
